Brisbane vs Adelaide: AUD 141,500 or AUD 129,500 Senior Pay

The RBA may hike again. GoWira's Australian city data shows how a senior developer's AUD 12,000 pay gap gets eaten by rent, groceries and a 10% GST.

Brisbane vs Adelaide: AUD 141,500 or AUD 129,500 Senior Pay

Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter has told the market that inflation remains the RBA board's first priority and that another rate rise is possible, even with property softening. For someone deciding whether to take an Australian offer this year — and, if so, in which city — that sentence changes almost nothing about the tax you pay and almost everything about the rent you will be quoted. The decision worth working through is narrower and more useful: given two Australian offers for the same job, which city actually leaves you with money?

The same senior developer role: AUD 141,500 in Brisbane, AUD 129,500 in Adelaide

GoWira's benchmark for a senior software developer with six to twelve years of experience sits at AUD 141,500 gross a year in Brisbane and AUD 129,500 in Adelaide. That is a headline gap of AUD 12,000 — roughly 9% — and it is the number recruiters will lean on. A mid-level frontend developer shows the same shape: AUD 95,500 in Brisbane against AUD 87,500 in Adelaide.

An important caveat before anyone builds a spreadsheet on this. These salary figures are GoWira estimates, modelled from cost-of-living ratios rather than observed payroll data. They tell you the relative shape of two markets reliably; they are not a quote from a specific employer, and you should treat any individual offer as the real number.

Where the AUD 12,000 goes before you see it

Take the city-centre one-bedroom in each place. Brisbane runs AUD 4,800 a month against Adelaide's AUD 4,300 — AUD 500 a month, AUD 6,000 a year, half the pay gap gone on rent alone. Utilities add AUD 370 a month in Brisbane versus AUD 340 in Adelaide. Groceries for one person: AUD 950 against AUD 870, another AUD 80 a month. A mid-range restaurant meal costs AUD 74.70 in Brisbane and AUD 68.30 in Adelaide, so a habit of eating out twice a week compounds quietly.

Add rent, utilities and groceries and Brisbane costs about AUD 7,320 more a year than Adelaide for a single person living centrally. That AUD 7,320 comes out of net income. The AUD 12,000 pay gap arrives gross, and Australian residents pay progressive federal income tax on it before it reaches the account. The margin that survives is thin — thin enough that the comparison flips on a single lifestyle choice.

Move out of the centre and it flips harder. A one-bedroom outside the core is AUD 3,200 a month in Brisbane and AUD 3,000 in Adelaide — a difference of only AUD 200 a month, or AUD 2,400 a year. Suburban Brisbane against suburban Adelaide is where the Brisbane premium genuinely pays. Central Brisbane against suburban Adelaide is a AUD 21,600-a-year rent decision that no salary band in either city covers.

What the ATO side of the sheet actually says — and what it doesn't

The tax structure is identical in both cities, which is what makes this a pure cost comparison. GoWira records Australian employee social security contributions at 0%, with no cap — there is no separate payroll deduction stacked on top of income tax the way there is in most European systems. Retirement funding runs through employer-paid superannuation rather than an employee contribution line, so the gross-to-net conversion in Australia is cleaner than the same exercise in France or Germany, where a comparable gross figure loses a double-digit percentage before income tax even starts.

GST is 10% standard, and it is embedded in the grocery and restaurant figures above rather than added at the register the way US sales tax is. If you are arriving from a country with a 20%-plus consumption tax, the AUD 950 Brisbane grocery basket is carrying less tax than the equivalent basket at home — but do not convert the two, because a basket priced in AUD and one priced in EUR are not the same object measured twice.

Two things GoWira does not hold for Australia: capital gains treatment for new arrivals, and anything about mortgage pricing. Hunter's comments are precisely a signal about the latter, and it is worth being honest that our dataset cannot tell you what a further hike does to a Queensland loan. Our earlier note on how RBA decisions land on an expat move covers the reasoning; it does not contain a rate forecast, because we do not produce one.

Timing the move against Adelaide's AUD 4,300 ceiling

If rate pressure keeps rental supply tight, the AUD 4,300 Adelaide centre figure and the AUD 4,800 Brisbane figure are the numbers most likely to drift during a job search, and they are the ones that decide this comparison. Lock the lease assumption before you negotiate the salary, not after. If your paperwork is still pending, our guide to how long work permits actually take is worth reading alongside the 2026 Budget changes for expat workers, because a three-month gap between offer and arrival is a three-month gap in which these rent figures move and your quoted salary does not.
