Mumbai Pays INR 3,200,000, Bangalore INR 2,700,000 — Who Wins

A senior developer earns INR 500,000 more a year in Mumbai than Bangalore. GoWira's rent, utility and EPF figures show how little of that survives.

Mumbai Pays INR 3,200,000, Bangalore INR 2,700,000 — Who Wins

India's federal borrowing plan for October to March came in at 7.9 trillion rupees, roughly where the market expected, with the central bank working to absorb the record cash flowing in from the diaspora. That is a macro story, and it does almost nothing to answer the question a software engineer with an Indian offer is actually holding: Mumbai or Bangalore, and is the extra money real? GoWira's dataset can answer that one, because the difference between the two cities is not a rounding error — it is INR 500,000 a year at senior level, and most of it is already spent before you see it.

INR 3,200,000 in Mumbai against INR 2,700,000 in Bangalore

Take the same job title and the same six-to-twelve-year band. GoWira's January 2026 benchmarks put a senior software developer in Mumbai at a median gross of INR 3,200,000 a year, and the identical role in Bangalore at INR 2,700,000. The headline gap is INR 500,000, or about INR 41,700 a month before any deduction. Recruiters will present that as a Mumbai premium, and technically it is.

Now put the fixed costs side by side. A one-bedroom in central Mumbai runs INR 100,000 a month against INR 83,000 in central Bangalore. Utilities: INR 8,000 versus INR 6,600. Groceries for one person: INR 20,000 versus INR 17,000. That is INR 128,000 a month of unavoidable spending in Mumbai against INR 106,600 in Bangalore — a gap of INR 21,400 a month, or INR 256,800 a year, paid out of post-tax income while the salary premium is quoted pre-tax. Roughly half the raise is gone on housing and food alone, and that is before a single INR 1,600 mid-range meal in Mumbai replaces a INR 1,300 one in Bangalore.

Step outside the centre and the picture narrows but does not flip: INR 69,000 in Mumbai versus INR 57,000 in Bangalore for the same one-bedroom. The premium shrinks to INR 12,000 a month on rent, which is the strongest argument for Mumbai — provided you are genuinely willing to commute, which is a different question from whether you say you are.

The junior offer is where Mumbai stops making sense

Seniority changes the answer completely, and this is the part salary aggregators flatten. A junior developer with under two years' experience earns a median INR 850,000 in Mumbai and INR 800,000 in Bangalore — a gap of INR 50,000 a year. Against an annual fixed-cost difference of INR 256,800, that junior is straightforwardly worse off in Mumbai, by a wide margin, unless they share a flat or accept a long commute from the outer ring.

At the top the logic inverts hard. A lead with twelve-plus years earns INR 5,500,000 in Mumbai against INR 4,200,000 in Bangalore: a INR 1,300,000 gap that swallows the cost differential five times over. Frontend specialists sit in between — INR 3,000,000 in Mumbai versus INR 2,500,000 in Bangalore at senior level, INR 1,700,000 versus INR 1,500,000 at mid. The rule that falls out of GoWira's numbers is blunt: Mumbai's cost base is fixed and Bangalore-plus-20%, while Mumbai's salary premium scales with seniority. Below senior, Bangalore wins. At lead, Mumbai wins decisively.

The 12% EPF contribution stops at INR 1,800,000

One structural detail flatters the higher offer. India's employee social security contribution is 12%, but it applies to earnings capped at INR 1,800,000. A Bangalore mid-level developer on INR 1,600,000 contributes 12% on essentially the whole salary. A Mumbai lead on INR 5,500,000 contributes 12% only on the first INR 1,800,000 — INR 216,000 — and nothing on the remaining INR 3,700,000. The effective social-security rate falls as income rises, which is the opposite of how uncapped systems in much of Europe behave and worth modelling before you assume your home-country deduction pattern carries over. If you are arriving from a system where contributions follow you across borders, how benefits work once you leave is a separate exercise entirely.

On consumption, VAT — GST in Indian usage — is 18% at the standard rate, and it is embedded in the INR 1,300 and INR 1,600 meal figures above rather than added at the till.

What this comparison deliberately does not do

If you are reading from outside India, the honest answer is that GoWira will not convert your current salary into rupees to tell you whether you are ahead. A rent in INR and a rent in your home currency are not comparable numbers, and any exchange-rate arithmetic quietly imports a forecast nobody should be selling you. Compare the shape instead: what share of gross pay your rent, utilities and groceries consume there, versus the INR 128,000 out of an INR 266,700 monthly gross that a senior Mumbai developer faces — about 48% — or the INR 106,600 out of INR 225,000 in Bangalore, about 47%. Those ratios travel; the rupee figures do not.

GoWira does not hold Indian capital gains rates, wealth tax treatment or mortgage pricing, so none of that is modelled here — and the borrowing programme in the news will move bond yields long before it moves a developer's rent. Before you sign, check how long the permit actually takes, and if you are considering contracting rather than employment, the entity question changes the arithmetic again.
