If the AI buildout really is absorbing USD 10.3 trillion of capital through 2032, the visible consequence for an individual software engineer is not a headline about private credit — it is that certain American metros are bidding for the same skills at wildly different prices. Brookings researchers presented that figure on Friday alongside a warning that the money is racing ahead of demand. The decision that lands on a developer's desk is narrower and more immediate: two US cities, one job title, and a pay gap large enough to reorganise a decade of savings. Frontend specialists show the same shape: USD 108,000 mid-level in Atlanta, USD 145,000 in Austin; USD 148,000 senior against USD 195,000.

The intuitive reaction is that Austin must simply be more expensive and the premium is an illusion. The cost figures say otherwise, and the size of the mismatch is the whole story. A one-bedroom in central Austin runs USD 2,900 a month against USD 2,600 in central Atlanta — a difference of USD 300 a month, or USD 3,600 a year. Outside the centre the gap narrows to USD 2,000 against USD 1,800. Utilities are USD 230 a month in Austin and USD 200 in Atlanta. Groceries for one person come to USD 580 against USD 520, another USD 60 a month. A mid-range meal out costs USD 45.8 in Austin and USD 40.6 in Atlanta, so a habit of eating out twice a week adds roughly USD 41 a month, not a lifestyle reclassification.

Add the recurring items and a central-flat life in Austin costs something in the order of USD 4,700 more a year than the same life in Atlanta. Employee social security is 7.65%, capped at USD 176,100 of earnings — which means the Atlanta senior on USD 155,000 pays it on every dollar, while the Austin senior on USD 200,000 stops contributing above the cap and keeps 7.65% of roughly the last USD 24,000 outright. That is a quiet extra kick in Austin's favour at the top of the ladder, and a rare case where a higher salary carries a lower marginal payroll rate.

The caveat matters: GoWira's engine holds the federal layer.
